Internet Round-UpBy: Peter McEwen, Insect Investigations Ltd, School of

This is the first column in a series dedicated to pest management and the Internet. As I am an entomologist I am dedicating this month's Round-up to entomology, and the column should be read in conjunction with the article on page 61N which also contains some useful Internet addresses and information. A good general starting point for the entomologist using the Internet is the site at Colorado State University (CSU): http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/Entomology/ent.html This is probably the most comprehen-sive entomology site at present and has entomology related meetings, a jobs list maintained at Colorado with links to other employment resources, links to other sites (including listservers and bulletin boards), links to on-line publications such as Flea News and Florida Entomologist, courses of interest, and links to sites containing pictures of insects and other arthropods. This site went on-line in 1994 and claims to be the oldest entomology world wide web (www) site in the world. Another excellent general entomology site is the Iowa State Entomology Index of Internet Resources: http://www.ent.iastate.edu/List which is a searchable database of entomology related resources. Type in Neuroptera for example and a whole list of appropriate resources (including the Neuroptera Home Page `Neuroweb' at: http://entowww.tamu.edu/research/neuropterida/neuroweb.html comes up on the screen. This is a wonderful resource which offers something quite different to the CSU site. Researching this article, for example, I just typed in `Triatoma' as a search word and got through to an interesting triatomine bug site: http://www.biologie.uni-regensburg.de/Zoologie/Boeckh/Rose/index.htm that I had no idea existed! The resources at Colorado and at Iowa are both very useful starting points for the on-line entomologist. It is up to you to go out there and familiarize yourself with what is available to you. In the unlikely case that you do not find a specific resource dedicated to your area of research then set up your own site now! |
